NAIDOC Week is the outcome of a long history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander efforts to bring issues of concern to the attention of governments and the general public. It may surprise many that NAIDOC celebrations began, in the 1920's. Not under the same title but the sentiment and concerns were just as real then as they are now.

Conflict and resistance
While these site could have been placed in the Aboriginal history section they have been put under their own heading to address the myth that Aboriginal people put up no resistance to European arrival. Conversely much of the Aboriginal history section could have been placed within this section being as it is, to a greater or lesser extent, a history of resistance to foreign occupation.

Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Timeline
The Pequots occupied the Pequot River (currently the Thames River) drainage basin in Southern New England prior to contact with Europeans. The Pequots hunted, fished, traded and prospered on their traditional lands: 250 square miles bordering the Long Island Sound. The word "Pequot" has been translated to mean "people of the shallow waters." They numbered about 8,000 just prior to European contact, which began in the early 1600s.
